How to Defend 1v1 Situations Like a Pro
Body positioning, timing, and decision-making for successfully stopping attackers in isolation.
One-on-one defending is the ultimate test. Win these battles and you stop attacks before they develop. Here's how to master them.
Positioning Before the Ball Arrives
Don't start defending when they receive. Start with your position relative to them before the pass. Can you intercept? Should you engage tight or hold off?
Approach Speed
Close down quickly, but slow down before arriving. If you rush in at full speed, attackers simply push past.
Body Shape
Sideways stance. Force them one direction—usually away from goal or onto their weaker foot. Don't be square on.
Patience
The best defenders wait for attackers to commit. Jockeying without diving in. Let them make a mistake.
Stay on Your Feet
Going to ground should be the last resort. Once you're down, you're beaten. Stay up, stay balanced, keep adjusting.
Watch the Ball, Not the Body
Attackers feint with their body. The ball reveals their true intention. Trust what the ball is doing.
Timing the Challenge
When the ball is slightly away from their foot, that's your moment. Clean tackle when they're between touches.
Recovery Runs
If beaten, immediate recovery sprint. Don't concede mentally. Many situations are salvageable with effort.
Learning from Attackers
Study your opponents. What moves do they prefer? When do they look up? Understanding them makes defending easier.
