5 Drills to Dramatically Improve Your First Touch

Master the art of ball control with these proven exercises that elite academies use to develop silky first touches.

Your first touch determines 90% of what happens next. A clean first touch gives you time and space; a poor one puts you under immediate pressure.

Drill 1: Wall Work Variations

Stand 3-4 meters from a wall. Pass against it and control with different surfaces: inside, outside, sole, thigh, chest. Progress by adding movement before receiving.

Drill 2: Bounce and Control

Throw the ball up at varying heights. Control it before it bounces twice. This improves reading the flight and adjusting body position.

Drill 3: Directional First Touch

Receive passes and take your first touch into predetermined zones. This trains you to think about your next action before receiving.

Drill 4: Pressure Simulation

Have a partner close you down immediately after passing. Force yourself to take a touch that creates separation.

Drill 5: One-Touch Passing Sequences

With 2-3 players, create patterns requiring instant control and release. This builds the rhythm elite teams use.

Consistency is key. 15 minutes daily beats 2 hours once a week. Track your progress with video analysis to see improvement over time.
